Last August, I received an expected Facebook message about my custom cookies. A production coordinator from the film industry was on the line, inquiring about… Christmas cookies. Yes, in the middle of summer! They were seeking cookies for a festive Christmas market scene, and to be honest, I initially thought it was a scam.
Intrigued (and still a little skeptical), I started asking questions. They couldn’t reveal the movie title, but confirmed it was a Hallmark production and that they needed cookies for a bustling Christmas market scene. The coordinator then asked about my largest cookie size as the actors might hold it for the camera to zoom in. 
I explained that my standard size was 4-5 inches. They were looking for something festive and colorful, specifically referencing a Christmas cookie set I’d previously posted on Facebook featuring Santa Claus, snow globes, and sparkling light bulbs, all meticulously decorated with royal icing.
After a few more calls, the initial disbelief faded. This was actually happening!
Designing Cookies for the Big Screen
The challenge was on. I spent a weekend in my kitchen, meticulously designing and decorating 3 dozen cookies with more than 10 unique designs. Each cookie was a labor of love. From sketching the initial ideas to carefully mixing the perfect shades of royal icing, every step required little attention to detail. Outlining, flooding, and adding delicate final details to get a dimentionnal look. I imagined myself in a winter wonderland, even though the summer heat was stifling.
Movie Title revealed : “Holiday Mismatch”
Finally, I found the title by Googling the keywords, it’s called “Holiday Mismatch”! The movie was launched last month, November 3rd. That said, I only have a chance to watch it on Christmas day, after delivering all the cookies and finally relaxing.
I’m usually not a big fan of Hallmark movies with their typical fairytale storylines. However, “Holiday Mismatch” was different. It was a lighthearted and fun story about two rivaling mothers, Barb and Kath, who clash over the local Holiday Committee. When they realize their kids are dating, the two moms conspire to break up the happy couple. It was a refreshing change of pace from the usual romantic comedies.
I was eagerly awaiting the Christmas market scene. The moment it appeared on screen, I was so excited I could barely breathe! I was glued to the screen, scanning for my cookies.
The Magic of the Moment
I spotted my logo stickers on the cookies. It was confirmation that my creations were indeed featured in the film… only the back of my cookies. LOL Initially, I was a bit surprised, but I also knew there was a possibility that my cookies might not be prominently featured in the editing process. However, seeing my logo stickers on screen was incredibly exciting. It was validation that my creations were indeed part of the movie!
Why Hallmark Chose My Cookies
I couldn’t help but wonder why they chose my cookies. I was curious to know what set my creations apart from the many other talented cookie bakers in Montreal. The coordinator mentioned that they were drawn to the intricate details and the evident care I put into each creation. It felt amazing to know that my passion and dedication had been recognized.
The Art of Custom Cookie Decorating
Decorating cookies with royal icing is a true art form. It requires patience, precision, and a love for the craft. From outlining and flooding to adding delicate details, each step demands attention. Mixing the perfect colors is also a challenge. For this project, I used nearly 12-15 different colors with various consistency! This experience has been an incredible journey. To see my cookies featured in a Hallmark movie is a dream come true. It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion I pour into every cookie I create.
